Russia's civil aviation authority on Saturday told airlines with aircraft leased from foreign companies to suspend international flights, further complicating efforts by lessors to repossess airliners from Russian airlines that have ceased lease payments amid international sanctions.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine will not affect Lufthansa's recovery plans, even if airspace closures require the German carrier to fly more circuitous routes to Asia. Lufthansa is predicting heavy summer leisure demand, particularly on European short- and medium-haul routes.

A UK Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson said: "Following the announcement by the Prime Minister in Parliament today, the UK Civil Aviation Authority has suspended the foreign carrier permit held by Aeroflot Russia Airlines (Aeroflot) until further notice.

Lufthansa is the latest airline to take the precaution of not flying to Ukraine, as rumors of war grow louder. It is still not clear whether it is the insurance firms for the carriers that are driving these decisions by threatening to drop coverage of those flying within Ukrainian airspace.

Niceair is a new airline based, not in Nice, southern France, but in Akureyri, North Iceland. It will fly its first scheduled flight on 2 June, Icelandic news outfit mbl.is reports. The name, Niceair, has a reference to North Iceland, where the company will serve a growing market for local residents as well as foreign tourists.
